Lateral thinking has helped Barrnon Engineering adapt their scallop trawling equipment to take advantage of nuclear opportunities in Eden
Barrnon Engineering have over 19 years experience, delivering value engineered solutions to industrial processes.
A core part of the business is producing fishing gear but most recently they have adapted the product so it could have an application in the nuclear industry for clearing radioactive “sludge” from settling ponds during the process of decommissioning power plants.
With support from Innovus and The University of Manchester and funded by the Regional Growth Fund and Britain’s Energy Coast, Barrnon has developed its product for the new application, resulting in a working prototype.
Now, following demonstration of its effectiveness to business leaders from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Sellafield Ltd, the product has been taken up and Barrnon have been awarded a contract to continue the development work with a view to its being used at Sellafield.
The application of scallop trawling techniques to nuclear is a great example showing that innovation can come from unlikely places.
