Eden, Cumbria, The Lake District – A natural choice for business

£3,000 grants to help Eden businesses benefit from faster broadband

16 July 2015

Businesses, charities and social enterprises in parts of Eden District can apply for grants of up to £3,000 to get better broadband.

Businesses, charities and social enterprises in parts of Eden District can apply for grants of up to £3,000 to get better broadband.

The scheme, which is being administered by Carlisle City Council and funded by the government, covers the costs of upgrading the connection allowing small businesses and other eligible organisations to start reaping the benefits of faster speeds and better connectivity.

The grant pays for the installation costs, while businesses pay any VAT charged and the monthly line rental to the service provider.

The scheme is part of the government’s Broadband Delivery UK and is a national programme running across more than 50 cities offering a total of £40million.

With the support of Connecting Cumbria and partners, Carlisle City Council successfully made the case for the scheme to be extended so that local businesses could also apply for connection vouchers.

The benefits of a faster, better broadband can be felt in numerous ways, whether that be the time taken to upload or download large files to backing up data online or using cloud-based software and video calls.

Eden District Council’s Economic Development Portfolio Holder, Councilor David Hymers MBE said: “We welcome this opportunity for faster broadband for businesses that are in the qualifying area and encourage them to apply for the grants. Access to a fast broadband connection is a fundamental necessity for every business in Eden. We will continue to advocate that all businesses in our area should be included in future funding schemes of this ilk, so they can expand and compete in the global market place that access to faster broadband provides.”

The funding is available on a first come, first served basis with a cut off date for applications set for March 31 2016.

Digital Economy Minister Ed Vaizey, said: “Our broadband connection voucher scheme is a huge success and has helped more than 30,000 UK small businesses so far. I’m delighted that Carlisle and surrounding areas are now part of the scheme and I encourage all eligible businesses to apply as soon as possible so they don’t miss out on this fantastic offer.”
