Appleby hotel in running for national award

Appleby Manor Country House Hotel

19 November 2015

Appleby Manor Hotel, nestling above the ancient market town of the same name, has been shortlisted in the Best Eco-Friendly Hotel Category in the Best Loved Awards for 2015.

Appleby Manor’s owners Mike and Angela Dunbobbin will find out if they beat off stiff competition from the other nominees Black Swan at Oldstead and Soulton Hall, Shropshire at a glitzy black tie award ceremony and dinner being held at Rudding Park, Harrogate, Yorkshire, on Monday 23rd November.

Appleby Manor has long standing eco credentials, having been awarded a Green Tourism Gold Award, and claiming top spot in the Cumbria Tourism Award’s earlier this year in the Sustainable Tourism category, which now means the Hotel will go onto represent Cumbria in the VisitEngland Excellence Awards 2016.

The team at Appleby Manor take their commitment to the environment very seriously and in an effort to minimise any impact the Hotel may have, they have made a commitment to reduce and minimise these effects where possible – they use local suppliers to reduce food miles, they have installed a bio mass boiler to reduce energy use and have also created their own bore hole to reduce water use, alongside a raft of other eco measures.

Indeed during the creation of the hotel’s new a £1m destination Garden Spa development Mike and Angela were keen to minimise the impact of this build on the local environment.

To ensure minimal environmental impact, local materials, suppliers and contactors were used where possible to create the Spa. In addition the building has been equipped with the latest in environmental technologies to conserve water and minimise heat loss and even the range of treatments chosen for use in the Spa itself have been carefully selected for their minimal environmental impact, resulting in one of the only carbon-neutral spas in the country.

Owner Mike Dunbobbin, said: “As a tourism business we are firmly committed to doing everything in our power to protect and sustain the environment, both from a local point of view and in terms or the wider global context. We strive to do all we can to support our local community and this is evident in the recent work on our new Garden Spa. So fingers crossed we can add another award to our growing list of eco accolades.’’
