Christmas has arrived early in Penrith following the opening of the new M&S Foodhall on King St earlier today.

Christmas has arrived early in Penrith following the opening of the new M&S Foodhall on King St earlier today.

Store manager, Matt Marston, officially declared the store open following a ribbon cutting alongside his team of 60 employees. Sophie Weir, a fundraiser for the store’s new charity partner, the Great North Air Ambulance Service, as well as the North Lake Primary School Choir also joined them.

The day was full of festive excitement as hundreds of shoppers gathered for the grand opening, keen to explore the new 8,900 sq ft store and 4,500 food and drink lines.

Store Manager, Matt Marston, said: “Today we have received overwhelming support from the local community. There has been a real sense of excitement in the run up to today so it’s great that we’ve finally been able to open our doors and let our new customers explore all that we have to offer!

“With Christmas just around the corner, we have already taken lots of Christmas food orders, and we’ve also seen lots of our Christmas biscuit tins fly off the shelves! Our coffee pod is proving popular too, with lots of friends and families gathering for a hot drink and catch-up while they shop.”

The new M&S Foodhall Penrith offers a selection of flowers, cards and gift wrap. Customers will be able to enjoy a range of specialty pastries and cakes, freshly baked each day in the in-store Bakery, as well as benefiting from free car parking*, a food ordering service and the popular Shop Your Way service. This gives customers the choice to order from the M&S catalogue in-store or online, with free next day in-store delivery and collection.

Matt Marston, continued: “We were also delighted to be able to announce our new charity partnership with the Great North Air Ambulance Service, today. As part of Plan A, each year M&S stores across the country get behind a local cause that we can channel our fundraising efforts into and the Great North Air Ambulance Service is a cause that all of the staff felt deserved our support thanks to the great work they do in and around Cumbria. We are all very much looking forward to getting going in raising money for them!

“Today also marked a new start for many of our employees, many of whom are from the local area. We are very happy that the new store has helped to create local employment opportunities and we wish them all the very best of luck in their new roles.”

M&S acquired the new Foodhall store from Co-op earlier this year. The previous store’s 20 employees, who had previously taken on temporary roles at M&S Carlisle during the transition, joined as new staff at M&S Penrith today.

Denise Wood, 38, from Penrith, said: “We have been looking forward to getting an M&S in Penrith for a very long time! Everyone is really excited and I think it will always be really busy. We’ll be here every week and it’ll save us going all the way to Carlisle!”
