Eden, Cumbria, The Lake District – A natural choice for business

Dodd & Co are In-Cumbria’s Business of the Month

21 April 2015

Business: Dodd & Co Limited

Industry: Chartered Accountants & Business Advisers

Founded: 1981

Where are you based/location of offices: Carlisle, Penrith & Lancaster

No of employees: 130 (and growing!)

MD/CEO: 10 directors that all have an equal say!

We’re home grown, all come from solid family Cumbrian backgrounds and we want to pass this on through our clients growing and recruitment and training of our staff.

Who is the most influential business person in Cumbria?

There are many influential people in Cumbria who do great jobs in their fields. It is often said that we could do with a “Boris Johnson” type of ambassador but we just don’t think that is the “Cumbrian” way – lots of people just get their heads down, get on with their jobs. It’s probably one of our strengths, but maybe also a negative?

Hunter Davies commented: a typical Cumbrian trait, going back centuries is for Cumbrians to "say nowt". He goes on to say "Cumbrians don't boast, don't show off, and they are suspicious of flashy noisy people who do."

However, one of the most influential business men in Cumbria for decades was Wigton's very own Bill Lowther, who began life as an apprentice, and made sure that Wigton's Innovia became an internationally known Plc, but more importantly, he kept the factory going in our small Cumbrian town during some very difficult economic times, thus securing the livelihood of thousands".

What makes you different to other businesses in your sector?

We want to be treated with honesty, integrity and respect in all that we do and we expect that clients want the same.

We believe passionately in client service. We listen to our clients and to what they want from their advisers and, what makes us different from our competitors, we act on it. We are always striving for improvement. Our business is all about clear and effective communication.

We also believe that knowledge is power, our team, from the support team to our technical staff are experienced, qualified to a very high level, and are continually learning and training all the time. We have a network of experts able to answer queries on all manners of different issues in the world of finance. And for if any reason we don’t know the answer, we’ll find someone that does!

What plans do you have for the next 12 months…

1. To look after our clients and their needs.
2. To share our knowledge with our clients.
3. Special emphasis: Auto Enrolment is such a massive subject at the moment. We are helping our existing clients with their AE requirements and taking lots of new enquiries for businesses who don’t have the time to deal with all the extra administration.
4. Helping clients access information about their business as fast as possible. One client commented recently that without real time information how can you make informed decisions about your business?

What’s your most popular product or service? Why?

At the moment – Cloud Accounting and Payroll Processing (due to reasons above) but it changes all the time and could be something else next year!

What’s the best thing about doing business in Cumbria?

The people!

We have so many fantastic businesses and successful business people in Cumbria. We’re incredibly proud to be Cumbrian and are delighted to be able to offer people a career outside of the big cities. Cumbria is a great place to live and work. There’s nowhere like it.

Is there anything politicians local or national could do to help the Cumbrian economy grow?

From many smaller businesses point of view, raising the VAT threshold for those that can’t pass the VAT on, would mean growth at the smaller business end as it tends to stifle the aspirations.

What’s the most topical thing happening in your industry?

Everything changes so quickly now, but we always get excited on Budget day, we know we need to get out more! It will be interesting to see what happens after the elections this year as the budget was quite “safe”.

Do you use social media? Who’s on it in the business?

Twitter is a great business tool. We have just over 1000 followers at the moment which has nearly doubled in the last year. It’s helped us sign up numerous clients. It also helps us deliver our message to existing clients, professional contacts and the press. We obviously have an account for the firm @doddaccountants and Rob Hitch (Farming) @rob__hitch and Heidi Marshall (Healthcare) @heidi__marshall are both regular tweeters in their specialist industries. Our Insolvency team Dodd Rescue @doddrescue have their own account.

On the lighter side… If your business was an animal, what would it be and why?

A Dolphin
Calm, quick to respond, intelligent and friendly

Give us your best joke!!

Man shows up late for work, and his boss shouts, "You should have been here at 8.30!" The man replies, "why, what happened?"

If you could ask our next business of the month anything, what would it be?
