Eden, Cumbria, The Lake District – A natural choice for business

Eden Businesses get ready for Tour of Britain opportunity

03 June 2015

A great number of Eden Businesses attended a meeting last night (2 June 2015) at the North Lakes Hotel in Penrith to learn more about Stage 5 of the Aviva Tour of Britain (ToB) coming to the area on Thursday 10 September 2015 and how they will be able to take advantage.

Eden District Council’s Communities Director, Ruth Atkinson, who chaired the meeting said: “I was delighted to see such a great attendance at the meeting and the strength of enthusiasm from businesses for embracing this premier sporting event.”

Businesses attending the event were informed about the route Stage 5 of ToB will be taking through Eden and how they can get involved and benefit from the event, especially with Cumbria hosting two stages of the race so close together.

Stage Five of ToB starts in Prudhoe, Northumberland and follows Hadrian's Wall to Brampton before heading into the Eden Valley, along Ullswater and through Penrith before the 8km climb to the finish at the top of Hartside, which at 1903 ft is the toughest finish the Tour will have ever seen and the first ever summit finish in the North of England. Detailed maps of the Stage 5 route will be available via www.tourofbritain.co.uk in July.

ToB is visiting Cumbria twice in 2015, Stage 3 on Tuesday 8 September starts in Cockermouth before heading out to the coast at Maryport then up to Silloth before racing through Carlisle and continuing up to Scotland for a finish at Floors Castle, Kelso.

Ruth Atkinson said: “The Aviva ToB will showcase Cumbria to a worldwide audience; the event is the UK's biggest professional cycle race and the country's largest free-to-watch sporting event and is broadcast live on ITV4. Over 120 world class riders from 20 teams will race through Eden District for Stage 5 of the Aviva Tour of Britain (ToB). Thousands of people are expected to line the route to see Stage 5, which is being supported by Eden District Council and Cumbria County Council. The last time the event visited Cumbria in 2013, it brought £4 million into the local economy.

“We are currently compiling a business support pack which will be available to download shortly from the Invest in Eden website. Practical advice, support and promotional opportunities for local tourism businesses, accommodation providers and eateries are available from the Eden Tourism Team.”
