Eden, Cumbria, The Lake District – A natural choice for business

Penrith ‘Mumpreneur’ Launches New Business

02 June 2016

Local businesswoman and mother of two, Jannike Taylor, from Plumpton, has launched a new online retail business this week, aimed at young families and the gift market.

The company, Lakes and Lambs, designs and manufactures a range of children’s boilersuits, to be worn over existing clothes outdoors.

Conceived, designed, tested and dispatched from her home in Plumpton near Penrith, Jannike spent 18 months developing the Lakes and Lambs brand, which is inspired by the Lake District, farming and country living.

Speaking from her farm in Plumpton she said, “The initial idea for the overalls came from a problem I was experiencing myself as a mum of two toddlers. In winter I could use snowsuits or waterproofs, but in drier seasons there wasn’t anything to protect their clothes when they were playing in the garden or the fields.”

“As we work in agriculture we have a house full of boilersuits! But we struggled to find any that were small enough for very young children learning to walk, or that were designed with children in mind. We wanted our own design to be functional but fun and playful as well.”

Swedish born Jannike, 30, has lived in the Penrith area since the age of 7.

Following graduation from the University of Leeds, she returned to the area to work in property as head of a rural sales department for property firm Smiths Gore.

She has spent the last 5 years working for high-profile Government Minister, Rory Stewart MP, only leaving in April to concentrate on her new venture.

Jannike also now assists her husband, Ben and family, in running a busy agricultural contracting business, and are parents to Harry, 4, and Abigail, 2.

The company is launching with three styles of boilersuit, featuring different bespoke print designs. They are described as being lightweight, breathable, durable and water resistant and are available in sizes 1 to 5 years.

Following the launch of the website on Monday, she said “It took a long time to find the right manufacturers and test the design, especially as I could only work in the evenings after the children had gone to bed. But I’ve had a long-standing ambition to see this through all the stages. I am very excited, as well as nervous, to now launch the product to the public, but I’m very grateful for the support and wonderful feedback we’ve received already.”

The company are in talks with a number of distributors, and are already showcasing their overalls within the toy shop at the Rheged Centre.

Jannike said “I am thrilled to be working with such a successful family business as Rheged, who have been fantastic in their support for a local brand.”

The Lakes and Lambs Overalls are also available to purchase from the website www.lakesandlambs.co.uk  and the company can be followed on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
