Country Puddings is the only Cumbrian entry in a list of 50 UK Food Stars.
The 50 were selected from hundreds of award-winning businesses as part of a government initiative to drive entrepreneurial activity.
Country Puddings, at North Lakes Business Park near Penrith, makes traditional puddings from top-quality ingredients with no artificial flavourings or preservatives.
Farmer’s wife Lynne Mallinson started the business to diversify after the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001. It outgrew her kitchen at Dacre and moved to North Lakes Business Park in 2007.
Mrs Mallinson was invited to a reception at Downing Street to launch Food Stars. Guests included leading industry figures such as Justin King, the former chief executive of Sainsbury’s, and Dame Fiona Kendrick, chief executive of Nestlé UK.
Mrs Mallinson said Country Pudding’s selection had come “as a complete surprise”.
She added: “We work very hard to ensure we produce delicious puddings.
“We have high standards and processes, and it is fantastic that this has been recognised by the Government.”
The Food Stars have been offered master classes on topics from exporting to social media, and will receive a package of support from the Food and Drink Federation and Cranfield University over the next year.
