Our Situation

As a respected local family business, Atkinson Building Contractors have been building throughout the Eden District for over 30 years, having successfully grown into an award winning ‘one stop’ building company employing over 70 local people with up to 40 local subcontractor companies appointed to provide building, maintenance and repair, heating and renewable energy services across Cumbria and Southwest Scotland.

Challenges

Operating in a close knit community means the majority of their work comes from personal recommendations - so reputation matters. Great pride is taken to ensure customer’s expectations are met and exceeded so they make recommendations to their friends and family.

Action

Investing in Eden and the local economy sits close to the heart of the company with work sourced and building schemes consciously and consistently completed locally which also provides job security for their local workforce and has enabled many long standing business to business partnerships with local suppliers and subcontractors. Their skilled workforce have designed and built many private luxury homes with bespoke finishes in prestigious locations throughout Eden. In addition they have built hundreds of affordable homes, easing the pressure on the local housing market in the Eden Valley.

The Future

Atkinson Building Contractors are optimistic about the future. Steve Atkinson the owner of the company said “We have just embarked on several local projects including a major at Ullswater Outward Bound Centre, developing 55 new homes at Keswick, the renovation of Hutton Hall (Old Greggs Bakery office in Penrith) into 7 luxury apartments/homes and we are about to complete the first phase building 5 luxury new homes on Beacon Edge in Penrith. Whilst continuing with traditional building work, over the past couple of years we have expanded with a dedicated team undertaking renewable energy projects bringing ‘green’ heat and power to homes and businesses.”
