Devonshire Arcade in the heart of Penrith has unveiled some new artwork as part of a collaboration with Carlisle College.

Lou Armstrong, a foundation art and design student at the college, was selected as the winner of an art competition.Devonshire Arcade artwork

Her designs depict the natural beauty and wildlife of Penrith town and the surrounding areas, wrapped on to the arcade’s four central internal pillars.

Paul Taylor, arts course leader at the college, added: “I am elated to see a student’s work in such a prominent place as Devonshire Arcade. The project as a whole embodies what we are doing as a course — that is, supporting prospective artists to make their mark in communities.

“Our thanks to Devonshire Arcade for giving us the opportunity to do this and making it happen.”

Local dignitaries, including mayor of Penrith Doug Lawson, representatives from councils and the college and retailers, gathered to mark the unveiling for shoppers and the community to see and enjoy.

Commenting on the project, winning student Lou, from Carlisle, said: “I was honoured to be selected as the winning entry for this collaboration between Devonshire Arcade and Carlisle College.

“It is a fabulous end to my college year, and I am very proud to see my artwork displayed in a public place for so many people to enjoy.”

Nicola Blake, of Devonshire Arcade, added: “We are delighted to support local artists and students — and what better way to do that than displaying such wonderful artwork in the arcade to delight both shoppers and retailers alike.

“Congratulations to Lou on her designs, which bring a touch of Penrith’s stunning nature indoors to the arcade.”
